Meet April's superstar patient Daisy, and the two dogs that helped save her life.
Little Daisy was admitted to the hospital as an emergency after she became acutely unwell. Daisy underwent a series of investigations including blood tests, x-rays and ultrasound scans. As a result Daisy was diagnosed with Evans syndrome.
Evans syndrome in dogs is a rare autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys both red blood cells and platelets, leading to immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). This condition can cause serious health complications, including anaemia, bleeding, and blood clotting issues.
Her severe anaemia and clotting deficiency meant she required life saving blood transfusions combined with intensive medication and nursing.
Lovely Rodney was our first hero, being an absolute star and donating blood for us to transfuse to Daisy. Daisy responded well to the blood transfusion, but her body was rapidly destroying the transfused cells, and she required a second transfusion only 3 days later.
Handsome Murphy came to the rescue this time. Murphy had already given blood before, and his blood was a perfect match.
This second transfusion went well and was the final rescue this lovely girl needed.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Rodney and Murphy for donating the life saving blood, and of course to their kind owners, whom gave up their time to bring them in to help this little girl.
Daisy was discharged 9 days after her admission, with big smiles and warm hearts from all the team. She truly was an amazing patient. Pictured below with nurse Estelle for her check up.
We wish her all the very best with the rest of her treatment and recovery.
